The Town of Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department and the Long Lake Fish & Game Club held the fourth annual Lake Eaton Ice Fishing Derby on February 13th, 2016. There were 23 contestants signed in for the sub zero weather. This is the most challenging derby in the Adirondack Lakes. Land-locked Salmon and other trout species have been brought in during the past events. Lake Trout have not been caught during the one day contest. Thus the prize money of $300 has rolled over next year for this species.
This year no fish were weighted at the station at the boat launch within Lake Eaton State Campsite. Although fisherman reported catching smelt that day and some were very busy bring them in. Prizes this year were given as $100 for the “No Fish Prize” to Dominic L. and four “Fish for Free” of $25. each were sent along to Richard H, Dean F, Thad J. and Timothy M. The door prize of a ice auger was won by Eddy R. A 50/50 raffle also provide a chance at winning.
The very first year of the derby only one Brown Trout was weighted in. The next saw a Rainbow Trout and Salmon. Last year there were two Salmon and a Rainbow Trout. This contest is very challenging to say the least. Weather has not been in our favor either. Year one was a big snow storm that only seven brave souls attended. Second year was also very cold. This year the temperature was steady at minus 13 degrees, but the wind made it hard to see across the lake at times. The weigh in station provides good shelter from the elements where coffee and donuts were available all day.
Word is getting out for the Lake Eaton Ice Fishing Derby. We try to provide something a little different. Check in with the Town of Long Lake website mylonglake.com for details to next years contest and other events that are going on with the LLF&G Club.
